Liverpool's Greatest Premier League XI

Goalkeeper - PEPE REINA

Reina arrived from Villarreal in the summer of 2005, with Benitez desperate to sign a world-class goalkeeper lacking at Anfield since the days of Bruce Grobbelaar. The Spaniard ended up to be just that, becoming a key player at the club for almost a decade. He was just 22 when he made the move to Merseyside- his lack of hair made him look at least a decade older- but he adjusted to life in the Premier League magnificently. In his first season he broke numerous club records, including most Premier League clean sheets in a row, with six, and 11 in all competitions. He won the FA Cup that year too, and was the hero in the penalty shootout victory over West Ham in the final. Reina won the Premier League Golden Glove award, given to the 'keeper with the most clean sheets, three times in succession (2005/06, 2006/07 and 2007/08) and was voted Liverpool Player of the Season in 2009/10. He was consistent, an excellent shot stopper, an integral member of the dressing room and a fans' favourite. He left Liverpool to join Napoli this summer, having spent a year on loan there last season, bringing an end to nine years at the club. He was a terrific servant.
