3. Trophy Haul (Or Lack Of)
Since the 2010/11 season, his first full season in charge, Roberto Mancini has guided Manchester City to 2 major honours, the FA Cup and the Premiership title. Up to now, he has spent a recession-pounding £284 million on players - £142 million per trophy. He has also recently dismissed FIFA's incoming financial fair play rules, which would lead any cynic to suggest perhaps Mancini fears he will struggle to keep Manchester City competing with a more level playing field. It certainly isn't the hallmark of the country's 'greatest manager' far from it. His return of two major trophies (neither in Europe) makes it hard to feel acquiescent towards his 'greatest manager' claims, not with England's most decorated manager working in the same city, or with Arsenal's manager overseeing his 17th year at the helm, after 7 major honours including 3 league titles. Chelsea have a man in charge who guided a little-fancied Liverpool to a Champion's League trophy. You can't help but feel Mancini's claims of being the best will always be rubbished in these circumstances. If the unthinkable happens for the second season in a row, or if he brings City roaring back next season (given he is still in the job) then a rethink may be in order. Sources:
