Man City Transfers: Eliaquim Mangala Completes £32m Move

French stopper becomes City's sixth summer signing.

Man City have today continued their summer building campaign with their first mega deal of the summer, bringing French-born Porto defender in for a massive £32m. Having been signed to his first club at the age of just five, Mangala broke into the Standard Liege team at 18 and quickly earned a reputation as one of the Belgian league's hottest prospects, and earning the attention of Porto in the process. In 2011 he signed for the Portuguese side - for just ‚7.5m - and continued his impressive progress, becoming an imperious central defender in the process over 50 first team appearances. The defender has long been expected to move to Man City, having tried to bring the player in during the January transfer window, and he will now join up with the squad ahead of this Sunday's season opener at St. James' Park with Newcastle. Mangala had been identified as the perfect partner for Vincent Kompany, and Manuel Pellegrini has welcomed the signing by saying his new defender can make an immediate impact in the Premier League this season. Though his commitment could never be doubted, ageing Argentinian Martin Demichelis is by no means a long-term solution and the fact that he played 27 times last season proved how much City needed a centre-back.
