5. John Terry
Destination: Chelsea John Terry has spoken before in interviews about how Sir Alex Ferguson approached him as a youth player. It is quite surprising really that, given he was a Manchester United fan along with his Dad and Grandad, he opted to sign for Chelsea instead. He can probably look back at that decision and, in fact, owe his whole career to it. It was Chelsea's youth team manager Bob Dale who decided to try moving him from midfield to the centre of defence, the position where he has gone on to become one of the best in the modern era. It is impossible to know if he would have ended up in defence as a United youth player, of course, but regardless it has been a wonderful occurrence for Chelsea. He has now amassed well over 500 games for the Blues, as well as captaining his country and earning 78 caps. In that time he has been the absolute core of all Chelsea's success, guiding them to 11 major trophies. In that time United have spent big on central defenders like Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, when they very nearly had Terry for nothing. Sources:
