Man Utd: 10 Defining Games Of The Treble-Winning 98/99 Season

9. vs. Nottingham Forest

Competition €“ Premier League, Date €“ 6th February 1999, Score €“ 8-1 By the time that February came around, United were in pole position in the race for the Premier League title, having gone undefeated since a shock 2-3 loss to Middlesbrough six days before Christmas. The struggling Nottingham Forest were not expected to turn the tide, though a valiant effort ensured that they only went into half-time 2-1 down. Subsequent goals from Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke after the interval made the score 4-1, however, seemingly putting the game to bed. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was then sent on in the 72nd minute to rest Yorke for the following week's FA Cup tie at Fulham. The Norwegian was brought to Old Trafford by Sir Alex Ferguson in 1996 after he'd failed to sign England striker Alan Shearer, and has gone down in history as one of the Scotsman's finest signings. His status as a 'super-sub' is exemplified by this game, in which he scored four goals in the last ten minutes to end proceedings at 8-1, one of the club's all-time highest league victories.
