It was still an important competition to top teams during the nineties, however, with managers making use of their best players in an attempt to get results. On their route to the final, United had to beat Premier League opposition in every fixture bar one. Several of these were highly dramatic match-ups that made their ultimate 2-0 victory over Newcastle in this match seem like a walk in the park in comparison. Having already won the Premier League and with the Champions League final set to be played a few days later, however, the team had to put in a professional and determined performance to keep their treble dream alive, securing victory with goals from Teddy Sheringham and Paul Scholes.
