6. vs. Southampton
Competition Premier League, Date 3rd October 1998, Score 3-0 Southampton have recently returned to the English Premier League after a considerable absence, but in the nineties they were perpetual survivors, always seeming to stay in the top flight despite struggling in the bottom half of the table each season. As a result, Manchester United's 3-0 victory over the Saints in this match was nothing out of the ordinary. What made the game special, though nobody knew it at the time, was the formidable attacking pairing that it premiered. Dwight Yorke arrived at United for £12.6 million prior to the beginning of the season, starting games alongside Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Teddy Sheringham before being paired with Andy Cole (who seemed to be on his way out of Old Trafford as a result of not playing regularly) for this match. The two hit it off right away, scoring a goal apiece before turning their off-the-field friendship into an on-the-field partnership that was responsible for 55 goals over the course of the season.
