Man Utd: 5 Things We've Learned From Their New Year Slump

1. Make A January Signing

Commentators are practically unanimous that Manchester United need a new midfield playmaker. Instead of signing one in the summer, Moyes dithered and then brought Marouane Fellaini with him from Everton at the eleventh hour. The Belgian has struggled both on the pitch and with injury since joining the Red Devils. Rather than talking up the prospect of new arrivals in the winter window, Moyes has instead made a rod for his own back by expressing doubts over the availability of potential targets. We must not misunderstand the United boss over this though. He has taken a realistic attitude in the face of a sobering problem. It is a World Cup year and only players not sure of their place on national rosters for the summer in Brazil will gamble on making transfers now. Throwing cold water on rumours of new signings has simultaneously added to fans' frustrations, however. Moyes made a valid point when he explained January captures may prove difficult, but that does not change the fact of inaction on his part and that of the club this past summer. Putting it plainly, the current Red Devils squad is stretched at what is admittedly a testing time of year for any team and in need of strengthening. United resting on their laurels after winning the title last term was an error of judgment. That can all be changed by working hard to get at least one new face in, preferably for midfield, this month. Manchester United fans, we want to hear from you.
