Man Utd Transfer News: £50 Million Bid For Edinson Cavani?

Mirror. The Uruguayan has been on the radar of a string of leading European clubs this summer, including Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid. But incoming United manager David Moyes, who officially takes charge at Old Trafford next Monday, is hoping to beat his rivals to the punch by making as club-record-breaking bid for the 26-year old. Cavani was one of the most prolific goalscorers in Europe last season, netting 29 league goals and 38 in 43 overall appearances for the Italian outfit Napoli, but it would take a huge bid to bring him to the Theatre of Dreams. The most United have ever paid for a single player is the £30 million they handed Tottenham for Dimitar Berbatov in 2008, and Cavani's £54 million release clause casts that into the shade. But the Premier League champions are hoping they can do business for slightly less, and will offer £50 million. They will face stiff competition for the star, but Moyes views Cavani as the perfect striking partner for Robin van Persie. The South American is strong and powerful and possesses many similar attributes to Wayne Rooney, whose relationship with United is still believed to be strained. Indeed, any bid for Cavani will cast his future into even more uncertainty and City and Chelsea could move for the England international if they miss out on the Uruguayan to United.
