Man Utd Transfers: 10 Deals That Should Happen In January
6. Diego Godin IN
Let's face it, the Manchester United defence doesn't measure up against the best in the Premier League, particularly when injuries and suspensions strike. So far this campaign Louis van Gaal has been forced to deal with no less than 40 injuries to his players, including first-choice defenders Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans. Such a busy physio room has forced inexperienced replacements such as Tyler Blackett and Paddy McNair to plug gaps in the back four, prompting the Dutchman to look for a top-class defender this winter in order to sure up his shaky defence for the remainder of the season. Atletico Madrid centre-back Diego Godin, who has been mentioned as one of Van Gaal's primary targets, could be the subject of a hefty bid from the Red Devils come January. Although United must at least match the Argentine's £28million release clause to open talks with him, the La Liga champions are unlikely to settle for anything less and will probably demand even more. If Van Gaal does dip into the transfer market at all this winter, it must surely be to strengthen his back four. His current defence could make or break the club's title charge and with this in mind, a £30million centre-back could be the difference between lifting the Premier League and scraping into the top four. Probability: 7/10
