Man Utd Transfers: 10 Former Players Van Gaal Must Bring With Him

10. Thomas Muller - Bayern Munich

Though prizing the former Bayern youth team star away from his boyhood club might seem like a difficult prospect, the German schemer has already been linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer - a link most likely based on noises coming out of Munich that he is frustrated with the lack of playing time he has endured under Pep Guardiola, particularly in terms of key games. Any move away from Munich, where he has played since 2008 would presumably be a wrench for Muller, who has played more than 160 times for the club, and scored 58 goals, but in Van Gaal, Muller has a familiar face who was hugely important in his break-through at Bayern. Before the Dutchman handed Muller his opportunity in the first team - which he took with aplomb, firing in four goals in three days on the way to being named player of the month for September 2009 - he was prepared to head out on loan for experience, but the faith shown in him was immediately repaid on the pitch. Since then Muller has been a fixture in the Bayern squad, aided by his versaility and the invaluable ability to add goals to his team, particularly from midfield, which is a shortfall that United need to address from this season.
