Man Utd Transfers: 10 Players Van Gaal Must Target In January

5. Nigel De Jong

Central defence isn't the only area Manchester United need to improve in in the January transfer window. They are also less than solid in central midfield with the likes of Anderson and Marouane Fellaini ineffectual and Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher no longer reliable. Which is why Louis van Gaal should look into signing Nigel de Jong. De Jong was linked with a move to United over the summer but stayed at AC Milan, though van Gaal could always reignite his interest in the enforcer. The 29-year-old would be a shrewd signing in that he already has proven Premier League experience having played for the Red's rivals Manchester City, while he has worked with van Gaal before. The midfielder played under van Gaal at this summer's World Cup for the Netherlands and knows the Dutchman's tactics and formations, and would need little bedding in period at Old Trafford given his previous experience of playing in England. Reports claim he'd be available for just £8 million and given how hard it is to find good deals in the winter window, this would be one.
