Man Utd Transfers: 10 Signings Louis Van Gaal Should Have Made

10. Mats Hummels

One of manager Louis van Gaal's biggest priorities this summer should have been to significantly improve his defence with a world-class centre-half needed following the departures of stalwarts Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic. Ferdinand and Vidic were massive personalities at Manchester United and were two of the club's biggest leaders. The decision to release Ferdinand and allow Vidic to join Inter Milan robbed United of two of their main authoritative figures, leaving behind Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones. That trio of players hardly instil confidence and van Gaal simply HAD to bring in a commanding centre-back to fill the void. He didn't. Mats Hummels would have been a terrific signing. The Germany World Cup winner was linked with a move to Old Trafford for much of the summer and at at least one stage it looked as though it might happen. Instead, he stayed at Borussia Dortmund with United failing to make their interest concrete by tabling an offer. They apparently weren't interested enough in the defender to make a bid, which is perplexing, as he really would have solved one of their biggest problems.
