Man Utd Transfers: 10 Signings To Save Louis Van Gaal's Summer
10. Thomas Vermaelen
Manchester United have been linked with a move for Arsenal misfit Thomas Vermaelen for much of the summer but as we enter the last three weeks of the transfer market nothing has yet come to fruition. Vermaelen is on the fringes at Emirates Stadium and made only 14 Premier League appearances last season. The Belgian centre-back could therefore be looking for a move in the coming weeks in order to nail down more frequent playing time and has been linked with United and, surprisingly, Spanish giants Barcelona. It is understood Arsenal would prefer to sell to the La Liga outfit rather than to a domestic rival, meaning the Red Devils would have to pay over the odds to land the 28-year-old, who is valued at £15 million. Louis van Gaal has to sign a new centre-half this summer and his insistence thus far on sticking with a back three of Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones is as puzzling as it is worrying. United need a world class central defender in the form of Nemanja Vidic in his prime because the trio of Evans, Smalling and Jones is anything but solid. Unless Vermaelen is brought in, van Gaal could have a very fragile defence in 2014-15.
