Man Utd Transfers: 5 Areas Moyes Must Strengthen In January

4. Central Defender

Another problem that has become apparent this season is at centre back, with Rio Ferdinand no longer capable of playing every game at the age of 35, and captain Nemanja Vidic looking past his best, the need to bring in fresh blood to the position has never been more obvious. Youngsters Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are still learning and Jonny Evans is never going to be a world class defender, leaving the backline in need of rejuvenation. Strangely however, little or no thought has been given to this potential problem, amongst the media at least, and it looks set to be a problem that could plague the side until it is rectified. Several players could be brought in to give long term stability to United, including Borussia Dortmund's Nevan Subotic, who could also bring an air of solidity to the back line. Over the course of a season, injuries to both Ferdinand and Vidic could have a catastrophic effect on the side as they continue to challenge in four competitions, and could force Moyes' hand in January.
