Man Utd Transfers: 5 Awesome Signings To Kill Off The Title Race

4. Leighton Baines

Sir Alex Ferguson has been in the market for a new left-back for a while now, and is lining up a long-term replacement for 31-year old Patrice Evra. He had his eyes set on Chelsea's Ashley Cole until he signed a contract extension at Stamford Bridge recently, and will now turn his attentions to Everton's £15 million rated Leighton Baines. Despite youngster Alexander Büttner showing promising signs of progress since his move from Vitesse last August, the feeling is United need a more experienced left-back at this current stage. Statistics collated last November showed that Everton's Leighton Baines is the best left-back in European football, with the Englishman providing more assists, crosses and chances than anyone else currently playing in his position. United were interested in signing the 27-year old last summer but were put off by the £15 million valuation by his club, however, Ferguson is keen to re-open negotiations and a big enough offer may be enough to tempt the Goodison Park club into selling the impressive defender.
