However, the Serbian is 31 now, whilst the latter is 34, and they aren't quite the same force as they used to be. Manchester United therefore need a new centre-back, and have been linked with Benfica's Ezequiel Garay recently. According to reports, the 26-year old is viewed by Ferguson as the ideal replacement for Ferdinand, and United are close to signing the defender during the current transfer window. The likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans have all suffered key injuries throughout the year as well as Vidic, of course, who missed most of last season.
