Man Utd Transfers: 5 Essential Summer Targets

5. Asmir Begovic

Begovic One of the main areas of the pitch critics have identified as being the one that is most in need of improvement is in goal. When David de Gea moved from Atletico Madrid in 2011, he had big boots to fill following the retirement of stalwart and Old Trafford legend Edwin van der Sar. The 22-year old however hasn't looked anywhere near to being as solid as his predecessor between the sticks in his first two seasons and a number of high profile errors have lead many of his detractors to suggest Ferguson buys in a replacement - if not for the long term, at least to provide competition for the maturing youngster. One goalkeeper that has been identified as an ideal replacement for de Gea is Stoke City's Asmir Begovic. The Potters signed Birmingham City's Jack Butland in January, who will arrive at the Britannia Stadium in the summer, raising eyebrows over the future of the Bosnian and questions over whether he will remain Tony Pulis' No.1 keeper. Begovic has been one of the most impressive goalkeepers in the Premier League this season and despite Stoke's recent dip in form, he was one of the main reasons why Pulis' side marshalled such a mean defence toward the end of 2012. He could be available for £9 million, according to the Mirror, who also speculate his arrival doesn't necessarily mean curtains for de Gea.
