Luke Shaw is perhaps most fan's No.1 choice when it comes to signing a new left-back but as stated, United need someone who can step straight into the side and make an immediate impact. That makes Fabio Coentrao an ideal pick, especially as he is currently warming the benches in Spain. The Real Madrid left-back has fallen out of favour under Carlo Ancelotti at the Bernabeu, making just four La Liga appearances this season. It is unlikely then that Ancelotti should block any effort to bring him to the Premier League, considering he appears to be deemed surplus to requirement. The the 25-year-old is a real talent and his versatility he can also play defensive midfield would not only give United a solution at left-back, but in the middle of the park, too. United's midfield problems are known, with their engine room perhaps as weak now as it ever has been, and Coentrao's ability to work in this area is a real bonus. The Red Devils tried unsuccessfully to sign the Madrid man last summer, and with Michael Carrick set to be out for a month with injury, may make a fresh approach before the window shuts.
