Man Utd Transfers: 5 Midfield Alternatives For Paul Pogba
4. Ilkay Gundogan
Since the retirement of Paul Scholes for a second time at the end of last season, Manchester United have not found a replacement for their long-serving ginger magician. Scholes was one of United's biggest creative forces with his searching passes and expert reading of the game, and his departure has left a gaping chasm in their engine room. Ilkay Gundogan of Borussia Dortmund is perhaps the closest fit when it comes to replacements, with the German playmaker regarded one of the best young midfielders today. Endowed with technical quality and known for his passing game, Gundogan would appear to be the heir apparent to Scholes and has been linked with a move to United. With Dortmund contesting the Champions League however, the 23-year-old would be ineligible to play for the Red Devils in European competition. Yet that shouldn't matter as United cannot be seriously entertaining any prospect of reaching the latter stages of that tournament considering their current plights. Gundogan could be key to saving United's season this term and Moyes should go all out to get him, or at least firm up his interests over the summer.
