Hummels is a player of which van Gaal has previous with. The Dutchman memorably sold the defender to Dortmund during his time managing Bayern Munich, something he has always regretted. And van Gaal now wants to be reunited with the German international after telling United officials the centre-back is the natural successor to Jaap Stam, Vidic and Ferdinand. A glowing endorsement indeed. Hummels is a tough-tackling centre-half known for his uncompromising style of play and ability to make near precision-perfect interceptions, and would seem like the ideal player of which to build United's new-look defence around.
