Man Utd Transfers: Why Has The Summer Been So Quiet?
BBC Sport) - Wednesday, 3rd July; players report back to training (Goal) - Friday, 5th July; Moyes' official presentation and first press conference as Man United manager (community.manutd.com) In the midst of that, it is rumoured that a date has been set for a meeting with Wayne Rooney and his agent in order to make a decision on his future. Appointments within the back room staff are also to be expected, with three to four of Moyes' Everton staff likely to follow him. The way it is, it already looks like a somewhat busy week, however I am expecting some of the transfers to be made official. My feeling about the whole situation is that the David Moyes' appointment had been in the making early in the year. Once United had his confirmation, the mechanisms started moving in order to start making approaches for his transfer targets and possibly finalising deals and then leaving for Moyes to finally rubber-stamp the deal was he's been instated as the new manager. Why the wait? It's a matter of respect. It's a way how to show that the given transfer was made by Moyes. If transfers were made before the 1st of July, I think it would send the wrong message. Man City chose to finalise deals before that their new coach, Pellegrini was appointed. What did this lead to? People saying that Sheik Mansour makes all the decisions. I believe that the wait is politically correct. Some might argue that United have already signed a player, Guillermo Varela, which is true. Varela is a player who was on trial at United towards the end of the season and it is possible that United wanted to finalise a deal before his appearance in the U20 World Cup so as to make sure that no bidding war ensues. This is similar to Chicharito's early transfer a few months before the start of the World Cup in South Africa in 2010. By powering through a deal before the World Cup United made bargain purchase. Had United waited until after the World Cup they would have paid much more and would have faced stiff competition following Javier Hernandez excellent displays in the World Cup. (Get to know more about Varela by clicking here). Sky Sports reported earlier this week that United have had a bid rejected for Everton's Leighton Baines. We'll hear more of that next week. If the right price may be agreed, and I believe it can, Baines will become a Man United player. I wouldn't be surprised if alongside Moyes on Friday's press conference we will see one or two new players being presented. The most likely? If rumours are to be believed, Strootman and Garay are done deals awaiting rubber-stamping. Supporters can't wait to read the news that Thiago is officially a Manchester United player. Word is that the deal is in its latter stages. If this is true, it should be a priority to conclude a deal since Thiago could be the star of the new generation at United. On the other hand, contrasting reports suggesting a renewal with Barcelona (Goal) and an interest from Bayern Munich (Express) are also emerging. The past week, the last week of June, was simply a waiting week. Waiting for the new beginning. A change in the helm after 26 years will bring interesting changes and probably, Moyes will seek to install his authority on the club at the earliest possible. Stepping into Sir Alex's shoes, is no easy task, however I do believe that United's structure and Moyes personality, ambition, hunger and talent will ensure that all in place for the quickly approaching new season.
