Upon originally joining United from Celtic in 1987, Brian McClair was employed as a striker. The circumstances of his move were controversial, as the Scots demanded £2 million whilst United were only willing to pay £400,000. Eventually, the matter was settled for £850,000, and McClair proved to be worth every penny over the next eleven years.

Moved into a central midfield role during the first Premier League season partially due to the signing of Eric Cantona and partially due to the winding down of Bryan Robson's career, McClair continued to provide goals and play whatever role was asked of him despite the signing and emergence of other, younger players.
