Manchester United's Greatest 23-Man Squad Of The Premier League Era
10. Michael Carrick (2006-Present)
Alongside Paul Scholes, the Premier League era United have consistently employed a second English player in the middle of the park. Between 1989 and 1995, Paul Ince made his name at the club as a good passer of the ball and a no nonsense tackler, whilst Scholes' 'Class of 92' teammate Nicky Butt was a dependable backup until his departure in 2004.
Since 2006, the most consistent (and often underrated) element of United's midfield has been Michael Carrick, who was seen by Sir Alex Ferguson as a viable replacement to Roy Keane. Though rarely attracting the headlines, Carrick has now made countless understated contributions to the team over a nine year period, and has been hailed by his now-former manager as the 'best English player' despite the fact that internationally, he has never really gotten a look-in due to the presence of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.
