One of the first players from behind the 'Iron Curtain' to move to a Western European club following the fall of the Soviet Union, Andrei Kanchelskis was signed to fill an attacking gap on the right hand side of midfield, playing regularly as United fell at the last hurdle to Leeds in the final Football League Division 1 season.

In the inaugural Premier League campaign and the two that followed, Kanchelskis continued to play regularly, contributing more goals than the average midfielder and even becoming the team's top scorer in the 1994-95 season (ultimately won by Blackburn Rovers) with a tally of 14. Like Paul Ince, however, he fell out with Sir Alex Ferguson and left the club in his prime as a result, though his departure left an open spot for David Beckham to fill.
