Meeting Steve McClaren's Newcastle Backroom Staff - Everything You Need To Know

3. Paul Simpson - Assistant Head Coach

A winger with Manchester City, Oxford United, Derby County, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Blackpool and Rochdale during his playing days, Paul Simpson took the leap into management in 2002. Having spent time as Rochdale's player boss, Simpson moved to his hometown club Carlisle United, before spells at Preston North End, Shrewsbury Town, Stockport County and Northwich Victoria. Simpson was then recruited by McClaren at Derby County to become his first-team coach - and he will take up a similar position on Tyneside. Renowned as a man who organises his players well and gets the most out of them, Simpson will work to McClaren's exacting brief, ensuring his squad know their specific roles - both on and off the pitch. A trusted lieutenant, Simpson will be McClaren's eyes and ears around the Benton training base and he will ensure that his head coach gets his message across accurately.
