Newcastle Manager's First Interviews - Did They Deliver On Their Promises?

13. John Carver

The following was taken from when Carver was confirmed to have landed the job until the end of last season.
"I have worked with, and learnt from, the best manager that this football club has had in Sir Bobby Robson. I know what this club means to this city and its people. "I believe in my players and the staff I have around me. I am confident that we can deliver exciting, successful football and look forward with relish to my role as head coach of this great football club."
It only took a few weeks for these quotes to be blown well and truly out of the water. Yes, he may have been the luckiest fan in the world by landing the top job at the team he supports, but that clearly wasn't enough as The Magpies went into the final day of the season with the chance of relegation still looming over them. As for believing in the players and staff around him, hanging people like Mike Williamson out to dry after the defeat away to Leicester and seemingly having some sort of personal vendetta against Mehdi Abeid prove this to be a false claim. Carver clearly lost the dressing room long before the season's end and certainly wasn't helped by any of those around him, most notably Steve Stone, who was sacked alongside Carver earlier this week. JC couldn't have gone much further in the opposite direction when he claimed he would deliver "exciting, successful football". Boring, one paced, lethargic, low on quality, and ultimately losing football is what he gave us instead. Did He Deliver? NO!
