Newcastle Transfer News: Charlton Youngster Catches The Toon's Eye
Aston Villa, Liverpool and Newcastle are all after Jordan Cousins.
Newcastle United have joined the race along with Liverpool and Aston Villa to sign Charlton Athletic starlet Jordan Cousins. The 21-year-old midfielder impressed in the Championship last season and The Daily Mail claim the Magpies are hoping to bring him to Tyneside - but that Villa are currently favourites for his signature. Cousins has just 12 months remaining on his Charlton contract and he could therefore be allowed to move on this summer, should a suitable bid arrive. The 5ft 10in midfielder made 47 appearances for Charlton last season, scoring on three occasions. In 2013-14, Cousins also played 47 times, scoring twice. Capped three times by England Under-20s, Cousins was called up to the Under-21 squad for the first time in 2014 but has yet to make an appearance for Gareth Southgate's men. Newcastle are keen to increase the British contingent in their squad, meaning a move for a 21-year-old Englishman could represent a shrewd transfer deal this summer. Cousins would certainly have the potential for a serious sell-on valuation in the future, something that the Newcastle board is also looking for with their recruits. However, the Magpies would have to hold off interest from Villa and Liverpool for the midfielder.
