Newcastle Transfer News: West Brom Defender Eyed By Magpies

Yet another centre-back has been linked with the Toon.

Newcastle United are reportedly looking to bring West Bromwich Albion defender Craig Dawson to the North East this summer. The 25-year-old former England Under-21 international was tracked by Burnley 12 months ago but he is now pricking the interest of new Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren. ESPN FC claim that the Magpies are looking to improve on the second-worst defensive record in the 2014-15 Premier League by bringing in Baggies centre-back Dawson, who would cost upwards of £2.5 million.
McClaren tried and failed to recruit Dawson while he was manager of Derby County but he now believes he will be successful in an attempt to lure the defender to Tyneside. Despite this, West Brom boss Tony Pulis will not allow the three-cap Great Britain international - who played during the London 2012 Olympics - to leave without a fight. Pulis is a keen admirer of Dawson and wants to continue to build his defence around the 6ft 2in centre-back, who can also operate at full-back. Having first progressed through the youth set-up at Rochdale, Dawson moved to The Hawthorns in 2011 and, aside from a loan spell at Bolton Wanderers during the 2012-13 season, he has played for West Brom ever since. During his career, Dawson has made 156 appearances and scored an impressive 28 goals from defence.
