Having three left-backs and three more players who can cover the position was always going to mean that there'd be a breaking point in the not too distant future, and it seems that Davide Santon is the most likely casualty of Newcastle's surprising selection luxury. In the past day or so, the player has been linked with a winter move to Milan, having apparently already been the source of interest from Roma, and given Alan Pardew's favouring of Paul Dummett this year, it doesn't look good for those who want to keep the Italian. He was apparently subject to more Italian interest this summer, and Milan's boss Filippo Inzaghi has been tasked with rebuilding his side, with a left-back at the top of his list of priorities. An alternative would be Davide Brivio, who Milan are scouting, but there would probably be more sense in bringing the Italian full-back home. His style would suit the Italians and he would be a dangerous player to add, even if his time at Newcastle hasn't inspired too much. In truth, Santon has been castigated for being right-footed, for being too adventurous going forward, and not strong enough in defence, and though his time has been marked by significant injuries, he doesn't seem the kind of hard-worker that Pardew would inevitably pick ahead of a more technically gifted one. Right now, he's probably fourth in line to start at left-back, and for someone once called the new Maldini, that just doesn't sit. As long as there is value in him, he should be sold, for his own sake as well as the club's, otherwise we will just end up with another situation where an unwanted player rots in the reserves and stories of unprofessionalism, poor work ethic and bad moods start to trickle into the press.
