Newcastle United Now Have The Worst Form In Europe
Six games, six defeats and a goal difference of -10 - it doesn't make for pleasant reading.
Newcastle United's run of seven straight losses not only makes them the club with the worst form in the Premier League - but with the poorest record in any of Europe's top-five leagues. The six-game period, which follows on from a defeat (1-0) to Manchester United on March 4th, has seen Newcastle concede 14 goals at an average of more than 2.3 a game, score just four, and lose every single one of them. That is beyond relegation form. No other side in any of Europe's top-five leagues have lost six straight games, with German side Hannover 96 and Spanish club Cordoba having drawn two apiece, while five teams have claimed three points (three of them by drawing three times, two of them by winning twice). In the Premier League, Burnley are second-last in the form table - but even they have accrued four points from their last six matches, due to a win and a draw, while Sunderland make up the other side in the bottom three. In fact, just six teams in any of Europe's leagues have worse form than Newcastle in their last six matches, with the Magpies having failed to pick up a single point since their 1-0 victory over Aston Villa on February 28th. Newcastle's run began with a 3-0 hammering against Everton at Goodison Park, followed by a 2-1 loss at home to Arsenal and then a fifth-straight derby defeat away at Sunderland (1-0) concluded the first-half of the run. Then a 2-0 defeat against Liverpool at Anfield was followed up by consecutive home losses to Tottenham Hotspur (3-1) and Swansea City (3-2) to complete the fixtures. Under John Carver, Newcastle have played 15 matches since the turn of the year, losing 10, drawing three and winning just two - giving them an average of just 0.6 points per match in that time. In terms of both first and second divisions across the entirety of Europe, Newcastle's form is seventh worst. Eight teams in all have lost six-straight matches, but six have a worse goal-difference over that period than the Magpies - with Ukrainian side Olimpik Donetsk the worst of them all, with a goal-difference of -18.
