Newcastle vs Man Utd: 5 Classic Toon Moments No Geordie Will Ever Forget

4. Demba Ba's Volley

As recently as last season, in the middle of what was an astonishingly successful term for the Magpies and for manager Alan Pardew, Newcastle pulled off one of their more impressive results of the season, humbling Sir Alex's men in front of a packed St James Park with a 3-0 victory that included two exquisite goals and a comically unfortunate own goal by Phil Jones. That performance was marked by an exceptional showing from Ivorian enforcer Cheick Tiote, and a memorable free-kick into the top corner by Yohan Cabaye, but arguably the best point of all was Demba Ba's opening goal that caught Man United unaware, and cemented the Senegalese striker's importance to the fans before he temporarily left the club in January to join up with his Senegalese team-mates for the African Cup of Nations. Getting himself onto the end of a typically strong knock-on from the resurgent Shola Ameobi - who gave the Man United defence a torrid evening at the head of the Newcastle attack - Ba ignored the best attentions of two centre-halves, planted a foot, turned and volleyed the ball over the head of a stranded Anders Lindegaard in the Man Utd goal. A very special moment in a very special season for Newcastle fans. http://youtu.be/kdfCYI6CPJ0
