Newcastle's Premier League Managers Ranked As Players - Worst To Best
3. Kevin Keegan
Newcastle United Manager: 1992-97 and 2008 Position: Forward Clubs Played For: Scunthorpe United (1968-71), Liverpool (1971-77), Hamburger SV (1977-80), Southampton (1980-82), Newcastle United (1982-84), Blacktown City (1985) League Appearances (Goals): 594 (205) International Side (Caps/Goals): England (63/21) Honours (As A Player): 1972-73, 1975-76 and 1976-77 First Division Title (Liverpool); 1974 FA Cup (Liverpool); 1974 and 1976 FA Charity Shield (Liverpool); 1977 European Cup (Liverpool); 1973 and 1976 UEFA Cup (Liverpool); 1978-79 Bundesliga Title (Hamburger SV) Arguably's Newcastle's most-exciting manager ever, Kevin Keegan was also a thrilling footballer - and an extremely-talented one at that. Named European Football of the Year twice (1978 and 1979), Keegan started his career at Scunthorpe United before joining Liverpool during their dominant spell in English football. After claiming nine trophies with Liverpool between 1971 and 1977, Keegan took the rare step for an English footballer of moving abroad - to Hamburger SV - where his success continued unabated. A Bundesliga title followed, before he returned to England with Southampton and then Newcastle. Capped 63 times by England, Keegan was brilliant on the ball and he scored 205 goals across 594 career league games - an impressive average for a deep-lying forward. The first real superstar of British football, Keegan helped drag all the sides he played for through difficult games and it is for that reason he shades in ahead of Gullit. Arguably Gullit was more naturally gifted, but Keegan contributed a greater number of important moments in big games.
