NUFC: 8 Reasons Pardew Can Defy Expectations This Year
8. Making The Right Signing
A lot has been said since the summer transfer window brought only two signings for Newcastle under the guidance of new Director of Football Joe Kinnear, in the shape of Oliver Kemen for a relatively small fee, and Loic Remy on loan. On paper, however, Newcastle have a strong squad, with two players competing for most positions, and few actual weaknesses that don't come down to form issues or a lack of match sharpness. There are certainly players who shouldn't be at the club, such as Gabriel Obertan, and Shola Ameobi, but the available options remain strong. The key issue that came out of the explanation following the club's lack of activity was that signings were a possibility, but that ultimately the decision came down to the available players not improving the squad. That is sound reasoning, if indeed it is the case, and given his form, it looks like Newcastle have made a genuinely progressive signing in Loic Remy who will improve the squad and the first team. That he was signed on loan is another smart move, especially if there is a clause to make the move permanent.
