Jordan Henderson has not only captained Liverpool since Steven Gerrard left for L.A, he has also captained the national side on several occasions. Whether or not the former Sunderland player is given the armband in Russia, his leadership will be needed throughout the tournament.

Where Henderson plays best is a deep lying midfield role, stepping back to allow his wing backs other midfielders the chance to power forward. While this is a very similar role to that of Eric Dier, there is no reason why both men cannot co-exist on the pitch at the same time.

If Southgate were to choose just one of the two, Dier would almost certainly get the nod, but having Henderson come off the bench to help the side see out a close game certainly wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.
