6. Jan Vertonghen
The Ajax captain finally joined Tottenham after a protracted saga which involved Spurs North London rivals, with Vertonghen choosing Tottenham over the Gunners. The tall centre back was voted the Eredivisie player of the year and lifted the Dutch league title at the end of a highly successful season. Vertonghen will be looking to make a similar sort of impact as his compatriots Kompany and Vermaelen, with all the signs being present that the Belgian will be a big hit in England. In Vertonghen, Tottenham have signed a strong defender, capable of physical battles against large opponents and possessing a good heading ability. He has also been utilised as a left back in the past, something that will no doubt prove useful for Tottenham as they seek to recover from last seasons disappointment.
