Premier League 2018/19: 5 Managers Already Under Huge Pressure
4. Manuel Pellegrini (West Ham)
West Ham have called the London Stadium ‘home’ for two years now, but have only seemed to regress as a football team, dropping from 7th place to 13th in the space of a season. The fans seem to have lost faith in the Hammers since the days Slaven Bilić was in charge. The London Stadium has an unwelcome feeling to it, and has become a hostile environment.
Pellegrini wasted no time in putting his own stamp on the club with additions such as Jack Wilshire and highly gifted winger Andriy Yarmolenko. The problem Pellegrini will face is the current West Ham side features some rather injury prone players and very little depth in replacements; when did Andy Carroll last walk out of training without a limp?
Having won the Premier League with Manchester City, Pellegrini clearly has what it takes to win, but does not have anywhere near the talent that was in the City team. It would be similar to asking Rory McIlroy to win The Open with a set of tennis rackets instead of golf clubs.
It is difficult to see where the board envision Pellegrini taking the club. Avoiding relegation is realistically a good starting point, but it’s hard to see that the powers that be will have hired Pellegrini to finish in 16th or 17th place. With the limited amount of players it will be hard for West Ham to climb the table and a top half finish is not realistic, but it all comes down to how Pellegrini can create chemistry and gel the new signings into the team. More importantly, how much patience will the hostile West Ham fans have if slow and sluggish football is played without winning games again?
