Premier League 2018/19: 5 Managers Already Under Huge Pressure
2. Unai Emery (Arsenal)
Arsène Wenger created a dynasty managing Arsenal from 1996 to 2018, and it is beyond question that he was one of the most successful and committed mangers to grace the Premier League. Love him or hate him, he has to be respected for what he accomplished over the years. By the nature of who Unai Emery is replacing, it will create immediate pressure - the example of David Moyes replacing Sir Alex Ferguson should alone put fear into the eyes of Emery.
All things come to an end and Arsenal as a club appear to be playing below their expected levels. It has been two years since The Gunners have been in the Champions League and similarly two years since they have celebrated St.Totteringham’s Day – It’s difficult to say which one hurts more.
The fans are hungry for Champions League football again and Unai Emery is no stranger to success. He has true pedigree in some of the world’s biggest clubs. However changing the style of play and ethos that has been locked in place for 22 years will be almost impossible to change within a single season and will require patience at the Emirates.
The manner in which Emery was appointed came as a surprise, as it appeared Mikel Arteta was primed and ready to leave his position within Manchester City to take the reigns of the Gunners. Being a club legend and very bright managerial talent in the making, the fans may have been more patient with the likes of Arteta than Emery in an unfamiliar era of rebuild in North London.
