Premier League: 5 Best Substitute Keepers This Season

1. Brad Friedel brad

Brad Friedel is potentially the best ever USA goalkeeper and definitely one of the best keepers to ever grace the Premiership. The 41 year old has not lost his place because of poor performances, inconsistencies or being bettered by a rival at the same team, Friedel has become Tottenham's second keeper for the shear fact that the manager, Andre Villas-Boas, is looking to the future of the team, Hugo Lloris, ending Friedel's 310 consecutive Premiership game streak. Lloris is a fantastic keeper in his own right, the twenty six year old has fourty three caps for France and acts as the national sides captain. Friedel began his professional career for the USSF in 1994 before being denied a work permit to joining Nottingham Forest, Newcastle and then Sunderland, and negotiated a loan deal with Brondby where he secured no games in goal. He soon joined Galatasaray and then moved to Columbus Crew where he was awarded with the accolades of being named the MLS goalkeeper of the year and in the MLS Best XI, both in 1997. Friedel joined Liverpool the following season but only managed to star in around thirty games in three years. He left the reds joining Blackburn Rovers as a free transfer in November 2000. His time at Blackburn helped embed his name in football fans minds as he frequently provided immense displays of his goalkeeping ability. shown in matches such as the 2002 League cup final 2-1 win against Tottenham where he was named man of the match and a vital display at Highbury in a 2-1 win. He was named Blackburn's Player of the Year for the 2002/3 campaign where he held fifteen clean sheets and was also named in the Premiership Starting XI. During Friedel's long career, so far one game shy of 650, he also appeared for Aston Villa between 2008 and 2011 as well as starring in the 1992 Olympic games, 1998 and 2002 World Cup for the USA. During his spell at Aston Villa the team came 6th, 9th and 6th (2008/9-2009/10) but left Villa in 2011 joining Tottenham. For Tottenham, Friedel played in the Europa league and finished the 2011/12 season in fourth place. Following the appointment of Villas-Boas and his signing of Lloris it seems Brad Friedel has fallen out of favour at Tottenham whilst the 41 year olds age seems to imply that he may retire in the next few seasons yet his ability, as displayed last season, shows he is still a great keeper, one who deserves to be a number one after having kept 14 clean sheets in the league last season. It is up to Friedel to maintain good form in training and push for the number one shirt or allow himself to take backseat as a Tottenham player. Only time will tell how Friedel's career will end, either at Tottenham or elsewhere but he is definitely the best keeper in the league to not be regularly starting for his team.
