Premier League: 5 Key Boxing Day Talking Points

5. Moyes Taps Into Old Powers Of Recovery

David Moyes may look on this fifth all-competition win in succession as the moment where he finally became his own man at the Man United helm. He did so in a very Fergie-esque manner, which is all the Old Trafford faithful have longed for - a statement that says 'Business As Usual.' When Hull broke off into a two-goal lead thanks to some worryingly slack United defending, alarm bells must have been ringing as fans wondered whether their Champions League future was in jeopardy. They ended it dreaming of possibly even making a decent fix of defending their title. No question, another five league wins in a row are probably required before title success can be deemed realistic, but this was a huge step in the right direction. United dealt with the deficit with the minimum of fuss, with parity restored by another for Rooney's end-of-career highlights reel. Such moments of class have reminded us of the class the Red Devils still possess, as weak as central midfield and defence remain. Today was a day for the wingers to shine. Ashley Young and Antonio Valencia have both had their armies of critics this year, but both gave a lively showing as they stretched the Hull defence to a dangerous degree. Moyes will be thankful for their return to some sort of form, and will hope they can put a run of games together. The most impressive thing of all for Moyes was the willingness to bring Januzaj on for the injured Rafael. It showed a willingness to gamble, admittedly from 2-0 down, but from that position Hull were reeled back in. Moyes will hope for a similar comeback in the season's wider context, but for now, inching up to seventh will have to do.
