Every fan wants to see their team spending huge sums of money on flamboyant, exotic, foreign imports who have torn apart the biggest leagues all over the world. As soon as the slightest rumour appears, thousands of fans will take to Twitter to say how well they know the prospect and how perfect he will be for their team (while hammering away at Football Manager) as Wikipedia editors change the player's page playfully and often prematurely. That's the kind of excitement these players inspire.
Surely these men and their glowing reputations can't fail in the English Premier League? Surely they will bring their goal-scoring boots to these fair shores to prove themselves on the biggest and best league stage of them all? Well, no, unfortunately: more often than not it seems, the more expensive players fail.
It takes more than just a talented footballer to cut it in the top flight of English football. It takes someone with the mental and physical strength to deal with the pace, intensity and pressures of life in the Premier League, and to live up to the expectations of their price tag. That's why cheaper players tend to do better.
