In the early days of the SPL Rangers were undergoing a complete overhaul. With Walter Smith having left the club along with a huge number of the club's former greats. Ally McCoist and Ian Durrant both went off to Kilmarnock, Stuart McCall found his way to Bradford and Brian Laudrup moved to London for an unhappy spell with Chelsea.

This began a period of incredible expenditure at Ibrox. That first season the club spent £35million bringing in the likes of Andrei Kanchelskis, Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Arthur Numan before, in 2000, they broke the Scottish transfer record which remains unsurpassed to this day.

Giant Norwegian striker Tore Andre Flo arrived from Chelsea for £12million. He went onto score 29 league goals in two seasons at Rangers and is often held up as being indicative of chairman David Murray's crazy spending. It's worth noting however that they received upwards of £8million from Sunderland when he moved on.
