The build to Jose Aldo vs. Conor McGregor was like nothing UFC had ever tried before. Holding promotional events in Brazil, Ireland, England, Canada, and all over the United States, Dana White was all in on this fight. The big fight was put on hold, however, as Aldo pulled out just two weeks before UFC 189 with a rib injury.

Chad Mendes stepped in and an interim Featherweight title was created.

In the fight, it was clear Mendes' wrestling game was a problem. While Conor did a pretty good job off his back, he had little answer for the takedowns of Mendes. Conor was clearly a round down and looked like he was going to lose the second after spending most of it on his back again. Many pundits believed wrestling was likely McGregor's kryptonite, and it certainly seemed that way early in this fight.

Late in the second round, Mendes attempted a Hail Mary guillotine from an awkward position. It never got close and McGregor was able to scramble to his feet. As they stood, it was obvious that Mendes was knackered, which may have explained the submission attempt. Conor sensed this and stalked him down. Landing a couple of punishing body shots to leave his foe a sitting duck, McGregor landed a big left hand to drop Mendes.

Conor pounded him out on the ground for the TKO win and the interim Featherweight title.
