Ranking Every Liverpool Transfer Under Jürgen Klopp
10. Xherdan Shaqiri
Notwithstanding the now-legendary front three, Liverpool's attack going into last season looked slim. Sturridge and Origi were sub-par (even if it hurts to write this), Danny Ings was understandably allowed to leave, Rhian Brewster was still injured and Harry Wilson wasn't deemed ready. In this context, signing Shaqiri from Stoke City on a £12M fee was a masterstroke.
A versatile footballer, who can be casted as a wide forward or as an offensive midfielder, with a devilish left-foot renowned for its set-piece wonders and long-range stunners, Shaqiri is the prototype of a top-team squad player. He isn't quite there to be an undisputed starter amongst Europe's finest, but any team in the world would like to have him as a substitute. Six goals and five assists from 30 appearances (mostly as a sub) are satisfying stats.
The last six months of the season have been frustrating for Shaq, as he barely played. The general consensus as for why is that his lack of tactical discipline leaves the team too wide open. As Josh Williams suggested on the Liverpool Echo, he brings more chaos than control. This lack of game-time has led some to speculate that a move away was on the cards for this summer. Fortunately, fans can trust that Klopp knows better. Shaqiri is a sound attacking option, young enough to keep improving, and could still offer a lot to Liverpool. If Klopp's tactical requirements sink in, and he increases his defensive workrate, he could reach the next level.
