Ranking Every Liverpool Transfer Under Jürgen Klopp

8. Joel Matip

It seemed like a huge step forward in solving Liverpool's defensive issues when Klopp signed Matip on a free transfer in January 2016. Composed, dominant in the air and positionally acute, on his day, Matip looks like Van Dijk's little brother, and while he can't match Virgil's leadership, long-range passing ability and overall defensive quality, his quick vertical ground passes and surprisingly flawless forward runs are something he brings to the team that the Dutch colossus doesn't. Had Matip played at his best during his three seasons in a Reds shirt, he'd crack the top 5 without a doubt.

Unfortunately, Matip only revealed himself as the player Liverpool fans hoped he was in spells. The rest of the time, he was either injured or going through a poor run of form. When he's been bad, he's been really bad, backheel-clearance-in-the-area bad. He was erratic, panicky, and running everywhere on the pitch except where he should.

Not many bet on him this season, but after Gomez' November injury, he once again stepped up, and thrived alongside Van Dijk, occasionally outshining him. Has he finally found his feet once and for all ? His recent performance in the Champions League final was magisterial, and he should be in the starting XI going into next season. If they want to claim his spot, Lovren and (more realistically) Gomez have no small hill to climb.
