Ranking Newcastle's Transfer Dealings 2014-15 - Outgoings

15. Davide Santon - Six-Month Loan And Then Sold Permanently For £2.8 Million (To Inter Milan)

Season Rating (While On Loan): 6.5 Success Of Sale Rating: 2 Again while Newcastle were struggling with injuries and suspensions in January, the Magpies hierarchy thought it would be a good idea to allow Davide Santon to leave for Inter Milan on loan - another deal which will be made permanent this summer, for £2.8 million. Yes Santon is not the best defensive full-back in the world - but he does actually play there. Once he was allowed to leave, the Magpies had to turn to Vurnon Anita, Jack Colback, Ryan Taylor and Jonas Gutierrez at differing times to cover at full-back - a crisis that could have been averted if Santon had still been on Tyneside. Again Newcastle have made a significant loss on a defender - he was signed for £5.3 million in 2011 but has returned to his former employers for just £2.8 million - and they have reduced their squad size even further. Santon is still only 24 and could have remained at Newcastle for years. Another ludicrous sale.
