Ryan Giggs, the most decorated footballer in the history of the English game and Manchester United's record appearance holder, has called time on his glittering playing career. The announcement that he had retired from the game came on a huge day for United yesterday with Louis van Gaal being named manager on a three-year deal with Giggs as his assistant. His new role at the club means it was untenable for him to continue wearing the famous red jersey and Giggs leaves having won 13 league titles, four FA Cups and two Champions Leagues, among 34 trophies. To put his incredible career into context, those 13 league titles are the same amount Arsenal have won as a football club, while only Liverpool have more than the Welshman.
