Not new signings so much as players that it would hugely benefit Southampton and Koeman to attach to the club on a permanent basis, Bertrand and Alderweireld are currently each on a season long loan deal. England left back Bertrand has shown himself more than capable of filling the boots of the country's most expensive teenager Luke Shaw on the latter's departure for Manchester United. In fact, Bertrand has been one of Saints' best and most consistent performers this year, leading to Southampton being particularly interested in making his move from Chelsea a permanent one. While Bertrand was unable to play against his former club, teenage academy graduate Matt Targett gave an admirable showing on his first league start, effectively keeping World Cup winner Andre Schurrle out of the game. Despite the challenge from Targett, who recently signed a new five year contract, Southampton would definitely like to keep the more experienced Bertrand as the first choice in that position. Back in the summer a fee of £10 million for a permanent deal was suggested to be part of Bertrand's loan and it has been reported that Saints will look to take that option sooner rather than later, not waiting until the summer to tie up Bertrand's future. Alderweireld, meanwhile, arrived from Atletico Madrid just before the close of the last window with a reported £6.3 million option to buy permanently. Given how much the Belgian international's strong and composed defensive play has contributed to Saints having one of the meanest defences in the league, it would be surprising for them to not want to make the move permanent. As yet there is no indication that a deal will be struck in January, but both Alderweireld and his team mates have been positive about his long term future on the South coast. Arguably, achieving a long term commitment from these two loanees would be the best transfer dealing Southampton could make this January, but now for some acquisitions from outside the club..
