Spurs Fans' 10 Most Hated Players Of The Modern Era

7. Willian

In 2013, Willian came very close to signing for Spurs. The White Hart Lane club had gone as far as agreeing a fee for him and had paid to bring him to England for a medical (which he did actually undergo) with a deal apparently having been made for his transfer from Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala. They had apparently seen off competition from the likes of fellow Premier League sides Liverpool and Chelsea in order to win the race for the Brazilian international - but it wasn't to be. The Stamford Bridge club jumped in at the last minute, with Roman Abramovich making a personal call to Anzhi€™s owner Suleyman Kerimov and signing Willian for a fee of £32 million €“ £2 million more than Spurs were going to pay €“ and really ticking Spurs and their fans off. Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho denied that any foul play or personal vendettas were involved in the acquisition (Andre Villas-Boas €“ Mourinho€™s former friend €“ was Spurs€™ manager at the time) and suggested that Spurs had paid the price for not doing the medical €œin secret€. But the fact that Willian had agreed terms, only to jump ship for more money at the last minute - and the fact that Spurs had done all of the legwork and paid for his medical - means that he has far from endeared himself to their fans.
