Spurs Transfers: 10 Most Wildly Over-Priced Signings Ever

10. Heurelho Gomes (£7.8 Million)

Brazilian international (that's always a bad way to introduce a goalkeeper) Heurelho Gomes joined Spurs from PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands on the back of a very impressive season with the club. He cost just under £8 million - which is expensive for a goalkeeper - back in 2008 and never lived up to his billing. Having conceded just 24 goals in his final campaign in the Netherlands, he also impressed against Spurs in the old UEFA Cup - indeed, it was his performances against them that truly brought him to their attention - he was brought in to replace Paul Robinson, who had lost his place under Juande Ramos in the previous season and had found himself dropped from the England set-up by the then-boss Fabio Capello. Gomes' performances for Spurs were erratic or, to put it another way, dodgy. He was severely lacking in self-confidence and, when Brad Friedel - who was 40 years old at the time - was brought in as competition for the Brazilian in 2011, he lost his place and seemed content to be a squad player. After a couple of years out in the cold, he started to express discontent at his treatment and was loaned out to 1899 Hoffenheim in 2013. He didn't impress there and he has recently moved to Championship side Watford on a free transfer.
